Today, a lot of the ad accounts I audit aren’t failing because the targeting is wrong. They’re failing because the creative is forgettable, the funnel behind it leaks, and the team is judging the campaign by impressions instead of revenue.
Paid ads in 2026 are mostly AI doing the targeting and bidding for you. Meta’s Advantage+, Google’s Performance Max, the whole platform stack now optimises automatically toward whatever signal you feed it. The lever has moved. It’s not in the audience builder any more, it’s in your creative, your offer, your tracking, and the funnel pages the ads send people to. That’s where I work. I don’t run ads in isolation. I run the whole system the ads depend on.
What ads that don't just burn budget actually look like
Ads work starts with a question most agencies skip: is the offer worth running ads to in the first place? If the landing page doesn’t convert organic traffic, paid traffic won’t save it. So I look at the funnel before the campaign. The offer, the landing page, the follow-up sequence, the tracking. Every leak fixed before a pound goes through Meta or Google.
Then I build the creative volume the platforms now need to do their job. Multiple hooks, multiple angles, multiple formats, tested against each other on small budgets before anything scales. Server-side tracking so the signal back to Meta and Google is actually clean. And a reporting layer that shows cost per booked call and revenue per pound spent, not just CTR and CPM. Performance Max and Advantage+ will optimise toward whatever you give them. The job is to make sure what you’re feeding them maps to revenue.
